Electric Cars: What's Available?
Electric cars are THE future of private transport. At present these vehicles are only viable in the cities, but with time they will also suitable for longer range driving.
It's worth remembering at this stage that the internal combustion engine has had over 100 years of commercial development and had untold dollars poured into research to improve it. Once electric vehicles are receiving the same treatment, as is becoming the case, we will see more improvements in the electric technology. So far the major limiting factor behind the widespread take-up of electric vehicles has been the battery performance. Vehicle performance has also been an issue, though recent models have laid this idea to rest, notably the Tesla Roadster with its blistering acceleration. Refueling is also an issue, but this can be overcome with a solid infrastructure development effort. Battery changeover is a serious contender for immediate recharge. Once in place, this infrastructure would be both environmentally and economically sound as well as maximizing battery life through efficient recharging. Let's have a look at some of the latest offerings on the electric vehicle front:
2010 Chevrolet VoltTechnically an electric vehicle even though it carries an onboard petrol generator, this snappy looking offering from GM looks set to be a real winner. The GM Volt will take all-electric personal transport to the next level.
2010 Smart Car ElectricThey don't get much smaller or more fuel efficient than the tiny Smart ForTwo electric car that looks set to hit the market in 2010. This tiny car can travel over 100 km on a single charge, which brings it into the serious commuter range.
2009 B-ZeroThe B-Zero mini electric vehicle is a real solution to fossil fuel powered vehicles that is suited to every day driving and can seat four people. It is to be released late in 2009, but at the moment it's only to be available in Europe. This is a pity.
2009 Tesla RoadsterThe super hot 2009 Tesla Roadster is the new benchmark in all electric performance. It may have a limited range, but the acceleration and top speed are unbelievable.
