The Energy Conservation Solution: Power Use Reduction
The best energy conservation solution is to have a more positive impact on the environment by reduce our home energy use. Even if our homes are already running on self-generated solar power, reducing our power consumption will still benefit us. Unused electricity is pumped back into the grid for others to use, and in most states you will receive a credit from the energy company for doing this. Let's examine both no-cost and low-cost methods of reducing our energy consumption.
The NO COST Energy Conservation Solution List
1: Turn off lights.
It is surprising how many lights are left on in rooms that are not occupied, running pointlessly and increasing your next energy bill. It may take a little getting used to, especially at night when we're used to the house being lit. I have taken to looking at the darkness in the house as a contribution to the future. It's quite a bit more pleasant that way. It may not seem like a lot to do, but lighting consumes a fair proportion of our household electricity.2: Switch off devices.
Lots of our modern electrical devices have a standby option, like on the TV where a little red light is still showing. While this makes them quicker to turn back on, they are still consuming electricity while in standby mode. Switching devices off fully will save on your electricity bill. 3: Keep devices running efficiently.
Some commonsense and regular maintenance will keep your electrical devices running as efficiently as possible. This is particularly important for devices that are continually running. Two easy tips for having an energy efficient refrigerator will help cut both emissions and your electricity bill and are an important part of your energy conservation solution. 4: Stay Aware.
I tend to forget about these measures, particularly if I am feeling hassled or am in a rush. One way to keep energy reduction in the front of our minds is to stick the electricity bill to the fridge and compare successive bills. You can even use this to experiment with your power usage: have a bill cycle where you turn off all lights possible and see what effect that has on your bill. 5: Cooling.
I try to avoid using the air conditioner unless it's absolutely unbearable. Some good quality fans will help if you're suffering from the heat and you can run between 10 and 20 of them for the same energy cost as running one wall mounted air conditioner. Also, closing the curtains early on a day that you know will be a scorcher will keep your home cool for as long as possible. 6: Heating.
Like with cooling, closing the curtains will reduce heat loss through the thin glass of the windows. If you have
double glazing
this heat loss is greatly reduced. It may not be as comfortable as central heating, but wearing an extra jumper is also an effective energy conservation solution.
7. Properly inflated car tyres.
Make sure your car's tyres are correctly inflated. I have included this here since it is a no-cost action that will have a positive effect on both your finances and your carbon emissions. If you are not sure what the correct pressure is either read the owner's manual if you have it, or contact a local tyre store, they should be able to help. Minimal Cost Energy Reductions
The next step is to modify or replace some of the home's existing devices so that they use less electricity. Here are some of the lowest cost options with very good returns on your investment.
Install Compact fluorescent Light Bulbs
These
energy conserving light bulbs
will slash your lighting electricity component and give you great long term savings, far outweighing the initial higher costs of the bulbs. This is an integral part of any home's long term energy conservation solution. If you are having trouble inserting the globes into the fittings, have a read of how to modify a

Switch to a Green Energy Provider
Most major electricity companies now offer Green Energy options. You can purchase residential solar energy from them, and if your current provider does not have an option for this you should easily be able to find one in your local area that does. These providers will usually also have wind and hydroelectric energy options, but it is worth checking out hydro power's contributions to the Greenhouse Effect through methane production before selecting that option. At the same time it is important to get the best deal on your residential and other energy needs. Have a look at Energy Consumers Edge for great tips on beating high energy prices.
