Practicing Excel Spreadsheet Formulas
Excel spreadsheet formulas are the cornerstone of record keeping in the office, and are an essential work skill. Sadly this topic is often neglected in schools mainly due to a lack of teaching time in mathematics. While children may use computers a lot in the classroom, they are rarely used for mathematical tasks.
The assignments and accompanying teaching notes are designed to get kids using spreadsheets for math applications. The assignments were written mainly for use on the now outdated 2003 version of Microsoft Excel. I found this the easiest to use but I am slowly coming to grips with the reorganized 2007 version. There are bucket loads of free spreadsheet programs out there and the directions given here may not work for all those versions. The best of these is the free OpenOffice application that comes as part of a complete office package. These assignments slowly introduce the idea of formula use as a method of reducing workload. Once formulae are seen as a benefit they are more easily retained by students. Spreadsheet Exercises These files are free for personal use.
