Basic Fraction Worksheets: Making It Easy
These basic fraction worksheets make learning fractions simple. The question of how to do fractions troubles many children through their whole school career but this confusion can be avoided by a child friendly and thorough introduction to the topic. It is important in the beginning to refer fractions only to single objects such as one pie, one pizza and so on. Only later can we introduce fractions of a large group. Doing this at the beginning would cause your child great confusion. The other aspect that needs to be reinforced early in this topic is the need for the pieces to be all exactly the same size. This is why circular objects are presented first. These are easily split into halves and quarters of even sizes, and it is immediately obvious if the dividing of the object has not been done correctly. When the object is not round, like a loaf of bread or a brick, it can be split either vertically, horizontally or with a combination of both BUT some of the pieces may resemble the original object, allowing for confusion. It is best to begin with round objects. ONE Whole Object The first thing to learn when dealing with fractions is that they refer to the parts of a whole, of one object. Unless this is clearly understood, all further work with fractions will remain mysterious to the child. While it may seem very simple, it is best to start with some drawings and colouring in. The two questions asked in this worksheet are "how many pieces of it are coloured in?" and "how many pieces is the object cut into?". Once these numbers are written in the boxes provided, the result is the fraction of the shape that is coloured in. Basic Fraction Worksheet 1 Encourage your child to be creative with the colouring in of the objects, and perhaps even draw some of her own. Young children in particular will have a stronger association with the concept to be learned if they are allowed to dwell on it and add their own creativity to it. This gives them a sense of ownership which aids retention. If you found this information useful, please share this site with others on your blog or website.
