Free Math Tutoring: Learing Addition Facts

Free Math Tutoring: learning addition facts for a Brighter Future

There is no substitute for solid skills practice. Thinking outside the square, so to speak, is commendable; however to do so one must first be able to operate competently and confidently within the square. That is what these free addition and other exercises are aimed at.

The aim of these free math tutoring addition exercises is twofold.

First, the goal is to learn basic addition pairs of any two digits in the 1 to 10 range so that your child will be able to add quickly and without having to pause to think. Knowing these additions is an essential part of fast accurate addition. Being able to instantly answer 9+7, 8+10, 3+9 and so on without pause for thought is the goal. This will be of immense help later on when more advanced additions are introduced. Again, having these simple additions under her belt will help your child concentrate on learning new concepts.

Second, the goal is to learn how to correctly line up numbers and set up the sum in on paper. For this reason I recommend that your child does NOT WRITE ON THE SHEET. Rather, the sums should be copied onto paper prior to being completed. This also has the added benefit that the sheet can be re-used, thus reducing waste.

WHY? Aside from the obvious practice of writing the sum correctly, itself an important skill, doing so will reinforce the connections between the numbers in the sums.

For this reason I also recommend that your child do ONE COMPLETE SUM AT A TIME.

These suggestions will promote success as your child will see the work being completed as she goes. She will also learn the number combinations faster than if she writes out ten sums first and then answers them. That way of approaching this work gives the brain time to switch off and so she is wasting time.

Maximize learning, promote good time management and achieve success.
