BODMAS: Order of Operations
This is a key concept that is all too often not thoroughly understood by children and this can hamper their later progress in mathematics. However, a little structured practice and a tiny amount of memorization will help overcome this hurdle. Have a look at this order of operations tutorial for a very clear explanation of the process. If you are already familiar with BODMAS and are looking for worksheets for your child to practice with, you can find them on the order of operations worksheets page. Complex sums involving multiple and even nested brackets uses the came process but your child will need to be competent with the basics before tackling this more challenging application of BODMAS. Fractions: Easy To Learn
Fractions stand out as a sore point in the maths careers of even some of the best students, but this does not need to be the case for your child. Fractions can be taught and understood easily and with enough practice your child will understand how to add, subtract, convert and even multiply and divide fractions with ease. Be warned though, this is a topic that will require a fair amount of practice to build the skills! To begin with, build a basic understanding through these basic fraction worksheets, where the idea of parts of a whole and what this looks like in fraction form are introduced. Once basic fractions are mastered, understanding equivalent fractions is simple. In order to be successful at equivalent fractions, a sound knowledge of math tables is essential. After mastering these skills it is time to move on to simplifying fractions, which again harnesses the basic times tables skills. Basic Equation Solving
Once a child has mastered solving sums with order of operations, solving equations is a breeze. The following links lead to a series of graded practice sheets with clear instructions on how to solve them. Starting with one step equations, it is easy to build up the complexity of the work until your child will be able to tackle even the most challenging problems with confidence.
