Free Printable Logic Puzzles: Build A Line

free printable logic puzzles

Of the free printable logic puzzles available, this two player game has the best replay value. While there is a single logical sequence of actions that can guarantee success for the starter in this game, that sequence is difficult to discover and becomes easily confused when the grid size is changed.

The Aim

The aim of the game is straightforward. Each player tries to make an unbroken line from one side of the board to the other. For the player using the black dots, the line needs to go across the grid. For the player using the white dots, the line has to connect the top and bottom of the box.

How To Play

As shown in the sequence of images below, the players take it in turn to join two of their dots. The dots must be adjacent to each other, and lines can be either vertical or horizontal. Any two adjacent dots of the player's colour in the grid can be used. There is no need for this pair of dots to be in contact with a previous line segment. The only other rule is that you are not allowed to cross any other line.

An Example

It is easiest if the players use different coloured pens, as in the examples below.

Figure 1: The player using the black dots goes first.

Figure 2: Then the white player makes a move.

Figure 3: Now both players have had two turns.

Figure 4: After five turns each, the grid may look like this.

Figure 5: After eleven turns, victory belongs to the black dots player; she has made a continuous line from one of her sides to the other.
