Comment Iodine, with the chemical formula I2, has the same lewis dot structure as Chlorine gas, which you can see here: http://www.green-planet-solar-energy.com/the-element-chlorine.html Each Iodine atom has 7 outer shell electrons and so needs only one more to reach the stable number of 8. It gets this electron by sharing one electron with another Iodine atom. This sharing is the single covalent bond between the two atoms of I2.
