Math For Kids: Game of 31

This game is a fun math for kids activity. It is another no-cost easy to play game that will add variety and enjoyment to your child's math experience.

Objective: To collect cards that add to 31.

Number of Players: 2.

Materials required: A deck of cards, a pencil, a piece of paper.

How to Play: The A to 6 cards from all 4 suits are arranged as shown below. The player who is starting selects a card. This makes the initial score. The second player then selects a card. This is added to the previous score. This repeats in turn until a score of 31 is achieved. The player who makes the total up to 31 is the winner. This constitutes a single round of the game. If the total cannot be made to 31 the round is a draw.

The winner is the first player to win five rounds.

Learning: This game practices both addition and strategy. It will become apparent after a while that the person starting the round can always win unless the second player follows a very particular course of action.

Those details will not be revealed here; the fun is in working out the strategies. You will see a look of realization on your child's face once she works out how the system operates.
