Math Puzzles and Games for Kids


Math puzzles and games are a great way to reinforce learning and develop problem solving skills. By using their math skills in a game form, your child will develop a more positive view of maths in a safe yet challenging environment.

Free Math Games

Quick to learn and fun to play, these math games will help your child with all areas of basic maths skills. Being strong with basic skills provides your child with a platform for ongoing success in maths.

Addition and Subtraction.

Pairs to Eleven. With a simple deck of cards you can help your child memorise number pairs that add to eleven. Fun and quick, this game will get your child's brain switched on.

Memory Elevens. This is a memory game using pairs that match to eleven. Good for building number skills and tracking within a grid. The game is scalable so you can give your child a sense of success regardless of age.

Game of 31 is a fun addition and strategy game that only requires a deck of cards and pencil and paper. This is a great game for reinforcing addition facts in a fun and challenging way.

Down to Nothing is one of the best math puzzles for practicing mental subtraction. The game can be modified to suit the age and skill of your child and requires only a pencil and paper.


Equation Solving and Algebra

Guess My Number is an excellent game for introducing equation solving in the easiest fun way possible. This game will engage your child for many hours and requires nothing more than pencil and paper.

The Factor Tree is a fun way to practice factorizing, building factor trees, and reinforcing times tables facts. Great for all ages.

Plotting Points and Graphing

Cartesian Battleships is a variant on the classic kids' game. As with the original, all you need is pencil and paper. There is a free pre-made battleship grid you can download.

Cartesian Battleships 2.0 is an upgraded version of Cartesian Battleships. It is played on all four quadrants of the plane and requires learning of the (x,y) format of point location. An excellent precursor for equation plotting.


Math Software: Games

There are literally mountains of kids' math computer puzzles and games on the market these days. Finding decent programs that have good educational and play value is not an easy task. Trial and error can be expensive, since a game will need to engage your child AND have good learning value. The games reviewed here are the best of them and won't break the budget.

Arcade Math Games: The Zoombinis This is an excellent logic game that will enthrall your child for many, many hours with excellent long-term problem solving skills as a result. Well worth a look.
