Mathematics Freeware

How do you find the best mathematics freeware programs available? There are many free programs on the internet, but sifting through them to find good ones can take ages. This page presents the best of the bunch in my opinion. Where possible there are also assignments and other learning activities supplied so that you can look at using these great tools with a minimum of preparation.

Graphmatica: Graphmatica is an excellent and completely free tool that can graph any 2 dimensional equation in (x, y) form. It can also fit equations to sets of points and do lots, lots more. You can also have a look at some of the more interesting Graphmatica equations and the images they make on the screen.

OpenOffice: The free OpenOffice software suite contains a spreadsheet program identical in function and interface with Microsoft's Excel. This is an excellent tool for teaching spreadsheet mathematics to kids.

Other Great Freeware

Okay, this now has very little to do with math but there are some other excellent free programs available that I just have to mention.

Celestia

Ever wondered what the night sky would look like from Alpha Centauri? With this program you can find out! There is too much to mention in this program. You can zip around to different galaxies, take a close up look at Saturn's rings or follow the Hubble telescope around the Earth's orbit. The colors are bright, installation is a snap and regular updates are created as new information comes to light. What a winner.
