WPPI Energy calculates rebates based on the amount of electricity the system will deliver, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). Since this will vary with location, it is worth having a look at the PV Watts energy calculation program to see what sort of power a system might generate. For example, a 3kW system located in Detroit would generate on average 3438 kWh over 12 months. Depending on the installation (see below) this system could quality for as much as the full $10,000 grant or as little as $6,900. The rebate amount is affected by the type of building and installation involved: New Buildings: For systems incorporated into new buildings a rebate of $3 per kWh is available. New Installations On Old Buildings: Installations on pre-existing buildings can be undertaken by either a certified installer or a non-certified installer. Certified installations attract a rebate amount of $2.50 per kWh and non-certified installations attract $2 per kWh. Hot Water:Solar water heating systems are also eligible for rebates as long as they use electricity as the back up heating component. Gas powered hot water services are not eligible. The rebate is $30 per square foot of collector area with a maximum rebate amount of 35% of the unit cost or $3,500, which ever is less. Additional RebatesAssessments: If you're not sure about whether your property is right for a solar installation, you can have an assessment done. WPPI Energy will rebate you 75% of the site assessment fee to a maximum of $375. However you will only be eligible for the rebate if your site is approved for an installation. If not, you're out of luck on the rebate front. Repairs: If your home has a solar electricity or hot water system that needs either repairs or routine maintenance you can get a rebate of up to 50% of the cost of the service work. The maximum that you can get under this rebate is $2,500. Personal Property Tax ExemptionResidents receive a 100% personal property tax exemption on the installation of any qualifying Michigan solar power or other renewable energy installation. This means the State will not up the property value based on the installation. SummaryThe Michigan solar power rebates available through WPII Energy are generous and cover the range of needs for your home. Couple this with the personal property tax exemption and the now uncapped federal tax credit and you could find yourself with quite a cheap solar system that will serve you well for many years.
