New Jersey Solar Rebates

new jersey solar New Jersey solar rebates for residential electricity production apply to systems up to 10 kW in capacity. While the maximum rebate amount for photovoltaic systems is $20,000, the maximum rebate of $2 per watt is quite low compared to some other states.

Unlike the majority of states, New Jersey does not distinguish between professionally installed and owner-installed systems. This allows residents to save some money installing their own systems if they are able to. This is a new development in 2009.

Rebate Details

The basic rate of rebate for the state is set at $1.55 per Watt. For every 1000 Watts (1 kW) of capacity, you can get a rebate of $1550. This amount is set to drop as the state approaches its set benchmarks for renewable energy production.

To get a larger rebate, there are two things you can do:

1: Energy Efficiency. Participating in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program allows you to apply for a further $0.20 per Watt rebate. This is an outstanding move, as joining this program will also reduce your overall electricity consumption.

2: Buy Local Products. In a move to encourage New Jersey solar manufacturing, the government has offered an additional $0.25 per Watt rebate for systems that use components made or assembled in the state. Even if this does not cover the higher cost of locally produced panels, it's worth considering for the knock-on effect to the local community.

So to obtain the maximum rebate in New Jersey, you need to have a system made from locally manufactured or assembled parts installed onto your energy audited home.

Other Savings

New Jersey gives you a full exemption on the state sales tax for all solar equipment. The sales tax is set at 7%, and every little bit helps. You are also eligible for a 100% Property Tax Exemption for the installation of renewable energy systems, so that your estimated property value for tax purposes is not increased as a result.

Getting A Quote

As a New Jersey resident, you can contact Sunpower for a free site assessment and quote. There's no obligation, and all you have to do is fill out a form. They are a reliable, well established company with a solid track record in the domestic solar area.
