Samsung Cellphones Go Solar
The newest of Samsung cellphones is called the Crest, or the E1107. It is a cheap mobile phone with a built in solar panel on the back to allow it to charge when in the sun. The phone is slated to be available in India, Europe, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and Latin America. Given that this phone is mainly aimed at non-western regions, the solar panel on the back is more than likely a response to the need for on-the-go charging. While regular electricity supply may be the norm in the West, the countries where this phone is to be released do not always have this luxury. FeaturesAside from the solar panel, the other features of the Crest Solar include a built-in FM radio, MP3 ringers, a flashlight/torch function, a 1.52-inch, 128 x 128 pixel display and 40 preloaded ringtones. There's no camera, and the battery is an 800 mAh Lithium Ion cell. Will It Be Available Here?It doesn't look like it, but if it were I'd definitely be interested. Given the basic nature of the phone, there's probably just too much competition in the US mobile market for this device to make it big. And when there's a regular electricity supply, the solar panel is not nearly as attractive.
