Schott Solar Panels In The U.S.
Schott solar panels are now being produced in the United States as the North American arm of the German based company has officially opened its new manufacturing plant located in Mesa del Sol in New Mexico. The $100 million factory currently employs 330 people and this may expand depending on the economic situation in the future. The company intends to invest a further $500 million in the United States but their timeline for this is not firm.
The plant has been operational since the beginning of 2009, but it has only just been officially opened with the production and signing of its first solar panel at a ceremony on Monday 11th of May. The official opening is a victory for State Governor Bill Richardson who has worked to make New Mexico one of the greenest and highest tech states in the country. The new factory produces solar panels for the commercial and residential markets. They also make receivers for concentrated solar thermal plants. These are the tubes that carry the oil through the focal point of the parabolic trough, as in the SEGS project. Given the planned vast expansion of solar concentrating thermal power stations in the United States and elsewhere, there is going to be a large market for this specialized equipment. This factory opening is a big plus in a time when many people's jobs are either uncertain of disappearing. Let's hope that Schott continues to invest in solar infrastructure plants as they planned.
