Solar being touted as cheap... why do you say it's not?

I am thinking of building a solar panel but am doing my homework. Why do you say that solar is too expensive to be a real option for most homeowners? I see much info about building inexpensive units for homes. I live in the US. Please explain -- Thanks, Gwen
