The SG5 Solar Wetsuit
The new Billabong SG5 solar wetsuit looks set to change the wetsuit market for good. The suit does not convert solar energy into electricity, but rather offers a far greater efficiency for absorbing heat and passing it to the water inside the suit. This is done by sections of "solar mesh" that traps and holds the sun's heat more effectively then regular wetsuit material. The new design is claimed to give about 30% more warmth than a regular wetsuit. That's a massive boost, especially for those wanting to take advantage of the spectacular but often hellishly cold winter beach conditions in places such as southern Victoria, Australia. It achieves this without any compromises to strength, flexibility and endurance that go hand in hand with this company's products.
The suit is manufactured by the Australian company Billabong, and is expected to retail for about $500 - $600 AUD this year. That's a significantly higher price tag than a regular suit, but it's a one off purchase for many years of comfort. I personally think this suit will take off big time in the surfing community.
