The Waldpolenz Solar Park in Germany

The Waldpolenz photovoltaic solar power plant will cover two square kilometres or 0.8 square miles and is to be built on a former military base. It's good to see that land being put to a productive use.

The image below shows the the size of the project. The dark blue section represents the relative size of another solar panel installation in Germany that is currently producing 6MW of electricity.

Waldpolenz

This plant will consist of 550,000 thin film solar panels made by the US company First Solar and will generate 40 megawatts of electricity, enough for about 40,000 homes. While this is one of the largest photovoltaic power plants in Europe, it will be dwarfed by the gargantuan projects planned for Victoria, Australia (154 MW) and Italy (190 MW). The Italian project will be built by Juwi, the same company that was commissioned for this one.

Power plants such at this make renewable energy more affordable for consumers. It is projected that electricity from this installation will be 20 - 40% cheaper than it is at present in Germany.
