Water Science Experiments: Bending Water

Water Science Experiments: Bending Water

AIM: to change the course of a stream of water using a plastic pen.

MATERIALS: pen, tap, a cloth.

METHOD: Turn on the tap so that a thin continuous stream of water is coming from it. Take the pen and rub it rapidly with the cloth. Then hold the pen very close to the stream of water. If nothing happens use a different cloth or pen or both.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN?

The pen and the cloth are made of different materials and so each has a different hold on its electrons. When the two are rubbed some of the electrons are dislodged from the material that has the weakest grip on them. They are transferred to the other material resulting in one positive charged substance and one with negative charge. As the pen is plastic it will lose electrons and therefore have a positive charge.

The positive charge on the pen pulls the water molecules towards it, since each water molecule has a large negative charge on each end. Since this happens for each water molecule in the stream, the whole stream bends towards the pen.
