Why store solar power?

by Steve G
(New Berlin WI)

This may seem like an odd question but I am hoping someone can help.

I know that if you make to much energy you can place it back on the grid and receive credit for that from the energy company. If this is true, why store the energy from solar in expensive batteries vs. moving directly to the grid and receiving off-setting credit for the energy you use?

By placing it directly on the grid wouldn't you forgo the expense of batteries over time which is a fairly steep cost?

If this is correct would the system look like cells - converter- electrical panel.

Thanks for your help.

Steve
